artist's statement: photography

While at the University of North Texas, I began photographing mannequins in a high-contrast style. The photographs provided inspiration and source material for paintings and drawings. The mannequin imagery lead into artworks which depicted women subjects as mannequins in an installation entitled “Woman as Object” which included paintings, drawings and videotapes. Since relocating to Austin in 1999, I have translated my photographic style into photographic portraiture.

The strength of my portraiture comes from the coalescence of my artistic vision with the intimate rapport I create during the photo sessions. My photographic portraits tend to break the rules of traditional portrait photography, especially regarding light and shadow on the face. I consistently capture the essence of my subjects through my portraiture; the works with pairs of people also capture the essence of their relationship with one another.
